History Funtana - Historical and Cultural Information about Funtana
The area of today's Funtana was inhabited long time before the 17th century when the very name of Funtana was mentioned.
However, Funtana developed around the castle and the church that were built by an Italian nobleman Bernardo Borisi. There are some written date about the area of Funtana before the 17th century and one of the more important information is that due to the outbreak of malaria in 15th and 16th century a lot of people died. The Borisi family had an enormous influence on Funtana, in fact, the Counts of Borisi were hereditary lords of Funtana until the late 19th century when feudalism was finally abolished in Istria.
First dwellings around the castle and the church were small stone Istrian houses where local population lived and the people were mostly earning their living via agriculture and fishing.
Today, Funtana is a charming little tourist place and it offers a lot of interesting things to see and do and, at one point, it was even voted the most-tourist place on the Adriatic coast
